Quiet Time Activities

With Baby Number 5 due to grace us with their presence soon, I’ve been accumulating a store of ‘quiet activities’ to entertain my rambunctious Master 2.

Not a naturally quiet child, Master 2 has only just started looking through books and barely sits still for more than 30 seconds. However, the silver lining is that he has just discovered Thomas the Tank Engine in a big way and I’m hoping to use this to my advantage!

My list of quiet time activities so far (Please feel free to contribute more ideas in the comments section below):

  • Books (and yes many of these are train themed!)
  • DVDs – I don’t like to resort to these too often but at least with a DVD you know that they have a time frame and you can choose a short one that is age appropriate.
  • Wooden train set – I think this will be a permanent feature in our house for a while!
  • Play dough – for older kids this is great. You’ll find a good recipe here that lasts for ages.
  • Drawing and colouring – Master 2 is just starting to show an interest here.
  • Wooden puzzles – I love these, and I love watching the kids concentrate as they try to put them together.
  • Paint with water books –  you can get these for just $2 at stores like Kmart and unlike regular painting there’s little mess!
  • Eye Spy Bag – Although primarily a sensory toy, this seek and find activity is a quiet one. You can find our tutorial here.
  • Sensory activities like this one are also perfect!
  • And this DIY Car wash and petrol station is easily constructed.
  • And if you’re into painting, these edible paints are a good choice for younger kids and toddlers.
